       The FDA expanded its emergency authorization of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to allow individuals to receive a fourth dose of the vaccine. The CDC is now recommending that adults over 50 and those that are moderately or severely immunocompromised get a second booster shot at least three months after the third dose. Evidence from studies on this additional dose suggests increased protection against severe illness without any added safety concerns. December 8, 2021

       With the Omicron variant becoming prevalent around the world, Pfizer conducted additional studies to test the strength of their vaccine against the variant. Initial results show that a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine increased neutralizing capabilities by 25-fold in comparison to two doses of the vaccine. These results come after the CDC's recommendation for a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine five months after their second dose, emphasizing the need for booster shots to stop the spread of the virus.
